Internship and Career Opportunities

Because the University is located in the state’s capital, students have easy access to a number of city, state, regional and national environmental agencies and organizations such as the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, United States Geological Survey Water Division and the two nearby Natural Resource Districts, Lower Platte South (Lincoln) and Lower Platte North (Wahoo). Other local agencies such as the Lincoln/Lancaster Health Department regularly hire summer and seasonal interns. Additionally private consulting firms have also hired interns in the past.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln employs research technicians, teaching assistants, and other positions both during the summer and the school year. The University Of Nebraska Environmental Resource Center has openings for volunteers during the school year as well. UNL Career Services is able to help students locate and make arrangements with a government office or firm interested in student’s skills and in augmenting their educational experience. Career Services will also assist students in the preparation of cover letters, resume, and interviewing tips prior to applying for an internship. Information and assistance in finding internship opportunities also may be found at the ENVR Advising Center and from the ENVR Program Director. The student’s emphasis advisers, as well as upper-classmen and graduate students are also great resources for locating internships. The majority of work involved with finding a good internship lies in the student’s hands. Preparing a strong and up-to-date resume is extremely important before applying for an internship.
