ENVR Major

The ENVR major at UNL is offered through either the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) or the College of Arts and Sciences (ASC). The major is designed to serve a variety of students who are concerned with both local and global environmental issues and environmental change. The major offers a thorough, holistic view of the environment and human-environmental interaction and the technical skills required for active participation in an environmental career.

All students will take a set of core courses that will provide them with the basic understanding of the environment. The learning objectives for the ENVR major are:

  • An understanding of ecosystem components and their functions, including energy flow and mineral cycles.
  • An ability to analyze environmental problems and issues from an ecological perspective.
  • An ability to use an interdisciplinary approach through integrating a broad range of concepts and facts in the assessment and interpretation of environmental problems/issues.
  • An understanding of the human-environment relationship within an ecological context.
  • An understanding of the concepts of carrying capacity and sustainability with the ability to apply these concepts to specific environmental problems/issues.
  • A familiarity with a broad range of environmental problems and an understanding of their relationships to one another.
  • An understanding of major methods used to analyze environmental problems in both the natural and social sciences.
  • A familiarity with major environmental policies at the state, national, and international levels.
  • A fundamental understanding of ethical issues in conducting research.

In addition to the ENVR core courses, students will also be trained in a specific academic emphasis.
