Major: Environmental Studies and Horticulture and Landscape Design
Career: Kinghorn Gardens
What projects are you working on right now?
I am currently in the process of building our Ecological service department. We are using science and design to help provide a legible way to interact with nature in people’s backyard, neighborhood, and greater community. People have an interest in helping foster a more sustainable community and we are responding to that need.
How has your experiences in the program prepare you for your post-graduate career?
The program helped me learn strategies of how to effectively spread the importance of being more environmentally sensitive. Working with classmates and professionals in various sectors of the community helped me to gain confidence in how to work within a team.
While at UNL, what opportunities outside of the classroom did you participate in?
I quickly found a home with Sustain UNL. Sustain was the start of my student involvement. I was lucky enough to have been president of the organization for three years. Also as a freshman and sophomore I was also part of the Environmental Leadership program. These two organizations helped me to meet a lot of wonderful people and work on meaningful projects that lead to real change on campus. It showed me the importance of being able to work as a whole to enact change.
Where did you get your green thumb?
I got my green thumb from watching and learning about the plant world from my Dad and all of the other people that have turned Kinghorn Gardens into what it is today.
Ideal way to spend a weekend?
My ideal weekend would consist of a golf round with my dad, spending time on the lake, and grilling out with family and friends.
